C.S. Lewis, the author of the Chronicles of Narnia and many other books, was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and is one of the city’s most famous sons. To honor him the city of Belfast opened a park in his honor in 2016 called C.S. Lewis Square. If you are in Belfast and a fan of C.S. Lewis like I am, I consider this square a must visit.
How to Get to C.S. Lewis Square
We visited Belfast as a port city on our British Isles cruise. Our cruise shuttle dropped us off at the Visit Belfast tourist center where we were able to pick up a map of C.S. Lewis Square and get directions on how to get there.
Depending on where you are coming from you might take different routes to the square, but the bus stop you are looking for is Connswater. There is a small Belfast visitor center located next to the square, we did not go in there but I would guess you can also pick up your map there as well.
What You Will See at C.S. Lewis Square
The C.S. Lewis Square is an open air park that has 8 sculptures in it. All the sculptures come from the first and most famous of the Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.
As you might expect there are sculptures of the lion, Aslan, the White Witch, and the magical wardrobe, as well as other significant characters and places in the book.
It is a really nice garden to walk around in. I liked the sculptures quite a bit, although the irony of making a sculpture of Mr. Tumnus was not lost on me. My favorite sculpture was probably the stone table because that is one of my favorite moments in the books.
Sum Up
If you are a fan of C.S. Lewis’ work and you are visiting Belfast then you really should visit C.S. Lewis Square. If you are not a big fan of his work then you this would not be a good use of your time. The square is not located near other major attractions in Belfast like the Titanic Museum, so you really need to want to visit to get here.
