Kennebunkport is a cute little town on the coast of Maine. While we were there we got to visit the beach. There are a bunch of beaches in the area, the one we went to was Colony Beach and it was just about perfect, as everything in Maine is.

What We Did at Colony Beach

I didn’t really know what to expect from a North Atlantic beach, but we were there in August, so the water was probably at its warmest. It was still cool, but not frigid.  It had some of the best sand for walking and playing in that I think we have ever seen.

The best thing about Colony Beach for us was how much fun Lucy had there. She was about 10 months old at the time and she had so much fun crawling in the sand and having the waves wash up to her. Unlike Hawaii where the waves scared her about six months later, the waves here were very gentle and she had such a good time playing in them. Of course we were always right there with her to keep her safe.

One of the things that helped Lucy have such a good time was that this beach is not very crowded. There is only a small parking lot for the beach, and since there are other bigger beaches close by this one was pretty calm while we were there. While she also had a lot of fun at Old Orchard Beach and the Pier, Colony Beach was just a lot calmer and less crowded.

How to Get to Colony Beach

Colony Beach (so called because it is located near the Colony Hotel) is on the East side where the Kennebunk River empties into the ocean. To get there you, appropriately, take Ocean Avenue south out of Kennebunkport. When you see the Colony Hotel on your left you will want to turn right onto a gravel road that will take you to the beach parking area.

Try not to drive over the cliff while you are parking, and then walk down to the beach and ocean.

Sum Up

We really, really enjoyed our time at Colony Beach, but if it is full there appear to be a number of beaches in the area that I’m sure have similar beaches. I would definitely recommend visiting this one or another because it is a very fun way to spend a couple hours, especially with kids.
