If you are driving the Cactus Forest Loop in Saguaro National Park then it is a good idea to stop and stretch your legs on an easy walk on the Desert Ecology Trail. This easy trail is accessible so it is perfect for just about anyone.
How to Get to the Desert Ecology Trail
The Desert Ecology Trail is located in the Rincon Mountain District which is the east side of Saguaro National park. It is just off of the Cactus Forest Loop. If you need to to get to the Cactus Forest Loop check out our post on the scenic drive here.
Once on the loop you will drive north until you see the road for the Mica View Picnic area. Here the main road turns east. You will drive a short way east until you see a pullout on your right. This is the parking for the Desert Ecology Trail. There are not a lot of parking spots, but the trail is so short that they tend to be turning over regularly.
Be aware that the trail is across the road from the parking. Make sure you cross in the crosswalk area and are aware of any cars driving through.
What You Will See
This is a simple loop trail of about .25 mile. It is almost completely flat so wheel chairs and strollers are fine. It takes you into the desert so you can see a variety of different cactus including, of course, the Saguaro, this is the Cactus Forest after all.
Along the trail you will see interpretive signs that help the trail live up to its name. These signs explain the ecology of the Cactus Forest through the lens of a neighborhood.
This walk does not take long, but you can feel free to take your time and observe the desert around you.
Sum Up
The Desert Ecology trail is an easy and accessible walk. It is especially worth doing with children since it is not difficult and provides a great learning opportunity about the desert ecology through a lens they understand, their neighborhood.
