Flexible Tripod Grip from Spivo, Travel Review

If you have followed us for a while you have probably seen us use the Spivo Stick, even if you didn’t realize we were using it. The Spivo Stick changed the game for GoPro videos by allowing you to put the GoPro on a rotating head to capture yourself and your surroundings. We have all full review of it here. But the folks at Spivo wanted to do more to help adventure photographers and videographers and so they recently released a flexible tripod grip as well. They sent us one of these to try and out and review, and I have to say I am impressed.

So far I have used this tripod on a couple of adventure trips to Moab and Phoenix and also used it around in my regular life. I have used it with three different types of cameras: a mirrorless camera (Lumix G7), an action camera (GoPro Hero 7), and a phone (iPhone 6S). Over the last month or so it has really become my go-to tripod for anything that doesn’t need to be super tall.

Features of the Flexible Tripod

I’ll just quickly go over some of the features of the tripod so you get an idea of what it can do.

Flexible Legs

If you haven’t used a flexible tripod before it is really a game changer, especially for travel and adventure photography. I have been using flexible tripods from Gorilla Pod for a long time because it is so easy to set up your camera anywhere, you don’t have to look for a flat place to set up your camera because you can make it work on any surface, or wrap it around something.

The flexibility on this Spivo tripod is awesome. I have to say that this is where it really outshined my Gorilla Pod. I have always been able to get the Gorilla Pod to work on most uneven surfaces, but I have never felt very comfortable wrapping it around something like a branch or railing. The Spivo tripod is so flexible though that it wraps tightly and securely and I felt safe using it in that way.

Ball Head

When I unboxed the tripod and saw it game with a ball head on top I thought it was cool, but I did not realize what a game changer it would be for me. The ball head gives you so many options when positioning your camera it really is amazing.

I especially liked this ball head for switching between portrait and landscape mode on the GoPro Hero 7. If you follow us on Instagram you know that I shoot our stories in portrait mode so that you can see as much as possible what is going on, but we shoot our music videos in landscape. This meant that while we were in Moab at Arches National Park and Goblin Valley I was always changing the orientation I was shooting in. The ball head made that super easy to do.

Grip

When you use one of these smaller flexible tripods it means that it can double as a grip for vlogging style videos, Instagram stories, and more stable photography. The Spivo tripod works great as a grip. It has textured legs that let you hold on even if you are sweaty or wet (which you often are on adventures). It also has a locking ring at the top that locks the legs straight down when you are using it as a grip.

Mounts

The Spivo flexible tripod comes with standard quarter inch screw that can mount most cameras. It has a screw on the ball head, and under it so you can remove the ball head if needed.

It also comes with a phone mount and a GoPro mount. The GoPro mount is the standard mount that you use with most GoPro accessories. The phone mount is a high quality aluminum mount that I felt was one of the better phone tripod mounts that I have used. It has a strong spring to secure your phone in the mount and I felt very safe using it. The only issue was that I had to remove my case, because it is rather big and couldn’t fit in the grooves of the mount. The grooves do have a rubbery surface to protect the phone body. I don’t know how long this rubberiness will last, since mine appears to be peeling a little at the edges already.

Price

Of course the price is always one of the biggest factors in determining a tripod purchase. The Spivo flexible tripod retails for about $50 but currently it is listed on sale for $44.99. This is a similar price to what the similar Gorilla Pods go for, although you can sometimes find them on sale for cheaper.

You can find cheaper flexible tripods on the market, the quality of those might vary depending on where you get them from. A tripod or grip is a safety concern for your camera as well as allowing you to get shots you could not otherwise. I feel that for what you are getting the Spivo flexible tripod is coming in at a good price point. But remember Spivo sent me this unit to review, so I may not be completely accurate on how I would feel if I had paid for it.

Sum Up

I really like the Spivo flexible tripod. I think it a good quality piece of camera equipment that will make travel and adventure photography easier and better. I use it all the time and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good flexible tripod.

Also, you might have noticed the wide angle lens I had on my phone in some of these shots, I will be doing a review of that gear shortly as well.
